Privacy Policy

We collect only what’s needed to reunite pets with their families - and we protect it.

Last updated: May 30, 2026

Information we collect

Account details you provide - name, email, and (optionally) a phone number - when you register or file a report.
Pet report details - photos, descriptions, and the last-seen or found location you choose to share.
Approximate location data, used to match reports and connect you with nearby rescue forces. We snap shared locations to a coarse area rather than publishing exact coordinates.
Basic technical data (device/browser type, and rate-limiting signals) needed to operate and secure the service.

How we use your information

To create and display lost and found pet reports and match them to one another.
To notify you about potential matches, sightings, and activity on your reports.
To connect owners, finders, and rescue volunteers - only the minimum needed to help reunite a pet, and only after the relevant parties opt in.
To keep the platform safe (preventing abuse, spam, and fraudulent reports).

What we share - and what we don’t

We do not sell your personal information.
Contact details (phone, email, exact address) are not published publicly. They are shared only when you and another party mutually choose to connect about a specific match.
Public report pages show pet details and a coarse area - never your exact home location or raw contact info.
We may share information when required by law, or to investigate safety and abuse.

Data security & retention

Passwords are stored hashed, and access to sensitive data is restricted. We apply rate limiting and other safeguards against abuse.
You can edit or close your reports, and request deletion of your account data, by contacting us.

Probably Earth, the geography game

Probably Earth (reunitepets.org/geo) keeps its own records, separate from your pet reports. A play profile holds the display name you choose, your ratings, points, badges and the games you have finished. It is created the first time you play and is identified by a token stored in your browser.
A game account uses an email address or phone number. Email sign-in uses a link sent to that address through Resend, with a six-digit code in the same email, and only a hash of the link and of the code is stored. When phone sign-in is enabled, Twilio Verify sends and checks a text-message code; the game stores your verified phone number, not the code. There is no password. Two cookies carry your sign-in for 90 days: geo_session, which says you are signed in, and geo_signed_in, which lets the page know to show your account menu. Signed-in accounts can also keep a saved-game checkpoint to continue on another device.
The play meter counts rounds per day so the imagery bills stay bounded. It counts them against your play profile and against a one-way hash of your IP address. The address itself is never stored.
Daily challenge and weekly cup boards show the display name of everyone who finished, with their score.
Automatic matchmaking keeps a queue entry linked to your play profile, including your selected game, display name, a one-way IP hash, queue activity times and the assigned room. A search expires after twenty seconds without a heartbeat. Queue entries are replaced by subsequent searches and removed when you delete your profile; assigned room credentials are stored encrypted.
If you report a mistake on a Script answer, the game stores what you picked and wrote, the round's text, your pin and a one-way hash of your IP address. The hash is there so repeated reports from one person count once.
If you read sentences aloud on the game's recording page (reunitepets.org/geo/record), the game keeps your voice recordings, the name you are credited by, where you told us you learned the language, and when you agreed to the recording terms. An admin listens to each recording; approved ones are played to players in Voices rounds, credited with that name. You can delete your recordings on the recording page.
Housekeeping deletes play-meter rows after 120 days, finished game rooms after 14 days, and rooms abandoned part way after 3, and clears the IP hash on a Script report after 2 days. You can delete a game account and its profile from the account page at reunitepets.org/geo/me, which removes the email address or phone number, saved-game checkpoint, profile, ratings, points, badges and results, scores on the daily and cup boards, and voice recordings.
